Pastor’s Remarks:
From Rev. Kris Brown
I hope you will come join us this Sunday as we sing hymns around a fire and consider what our hearts need to let go so that we might grow into the people God longs for us to be. We’ll worship together outside then share what I expect will be a lot of delicious food afterward (you may just bring yourself but we’d love to taste your favorite side dish or desert). Anyone who’d like to spend more time wandering around our farm, meeting the horses, or simply taking a nice walk, is welcome. As we enter Lent together, we do well to notice at least some of what we have in common, our desire for our burdens to be lifted and a God who loves each and every one of us.
We also might celebrate, if in a minor key, that entering into Lent, we enter Spring together. Indeed, “lent” is simply a middle English word for “lengthen,” and most directly refers to the lengthening amount of daylight that we experience in Spring. It’s wonderful when our church encourages us to see God’s hand where we are. As more and more light shines into our dark places, we may better recognize them for what they are. Leaning into God, we may decide we are ready to step out of them, to leave behind the worries, the fears, the plain old sin that would hold us back.
I’m thankful to be traveling through Lent with all of you. As we examine ourselves, as we invite God to soften our hearts and strengthen our minds, we might look around and thank God that we are not alone. We have one another. Our God encourages us; our God is with us. Easter, just ahead; with God’s help, shall we be more ready for it than we ever have been before?
